The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable and valid scale for measuring the level of self-understanding in middle age. An exploratory review of previous studies on middle-aged self-understanding, literature and relevant measurement tools, was conducted to establish operational definitions and develop preliminary items. Subsequently, 6 experts and then a panel of 3 experts provided feedback on the content validity of the preliminary items, resulting in a final selection of 46 preliminary items. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were then conducted to confirm the sub-factor structure of the scale and to name each factor. The factor analysis resulted in the completed scale with a total of 12 items and a 3-factor structure. Each factor was named as follows: "Self-understanding of life's purpose and meaning" consisting of 6 items, "Self-understanding of what is truly desired" consisting of 3 items, and finally "Self-understanding of middle-aged changes" consisting of 3 items. In this study, we examined the self-understanding of middle age, which has recently been emphasized, and developed a measurement tool for self-understanding in middle age based on this examination. It is expected that this will play an important role in facilitating and analyzing various future studies on middle age. |
